The Humble Toast Sportstar Of the Week: Akiva Fenner

The Jewish Link and The Humble Toast would like to recognize Akiva Fenner as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The 12-year-old sixth grader at the Yavneh Academy was the goalie and a key contributor on the Teaneck Junior Soccer League championship Guyana team. (Editor’s note: Team Guyana won the game in an exciting shootout.) Winning is not new to Fenner as he has already won multiple soccer, basketball and flag football championships.

Akiva, congrats on the championship and on being recognized as this week’s Sportstar of the Week! Who are your role models and why?

My parents I guess. They bring me to all my sports games, even in the rain, snow and cold and watch me. Even if our team doesn’t do well and loses they support me and give me words of encouragement.

What is your favorite sport?

All sports but I especially like football because it’s very fun to play and I enjoy all the strategic elements of the game.

What is your pregame routine?

I don’t have one at the moment, but now that I am a sports star of the week maybe I will start!

What is your greatest sports accomplishment?

Winning my soccer championships last month (November 12) in a really nail-biting game that went to extra time, and a penalty shoot out. I was the goalie and it was very nerve wracking being responsible for trying to save goals for my team, but I saved multiple shots, and even scored my own penalty.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

Tom Brady – I support the Patriots and when he was on the Patriots he brought us multiple championships and he seems like a really nice guy (not that I know him, but would love to meet him if you can arrange that for me!)

What is your earliest sports memory?

When I was four or five years old my cousin introduced me to football and I became a Patriots fan.

What is your weirdest sports memory?

I went to watch a Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) college basketball game, and was waiting for a picture with one of the FDU players. One of the players from the team they were playing stopped and thought I wanted a picture with them.

What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?

Watching TV, listening to music and reading.

What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?

It’s very fun.

The Humble Toast Star of the week will receive a $25 gift card to The Humble Toast. Please send nominees for an upcoming The Humble Toast Jewish Link Stars of the Week to [email protected].
