The Jewish Link and The Humble Toast would like to recognize Sami and Brayden Nussbaum as this week’s Sportstars of the Week. Sami a fifth grader at Yavneh Academy plays Zion and MGBL basketball, softball for Yavneh Youth League and, most recently, started playing tennis too. She really enjoys the recess leagues at Yavneh Academy where she plays kickball, baseball, soccer and football. Sami was the only girl to advance to the second round of the home run derby at the end of last year. Brayden, a second grader at Yavneh plays BBO baseball, Broncos basketball, TABC Jr Hockey and recently started playing ice hockey too. Brayden is an all around athlete and loves recess sports at Yavneh Academy, where he has been organizing soccer, kickball and football teams for his classmates since kindergarten.
Sami and Brayden congratulations on being recognized as this week’s sportstar of the week. Who is your role model and why?
Sami: My dad, because he plays lots of sports. and he helps me. He coaches me and tells me if I am doing something wrong and how to do it better.
Brayden: Aaron Judge because he is a very good baseball player.
What is your favorite sport?
Sami: Softball, because I like the feeling when I hit the ball with the bat. I like crushing it!
Brayden: Baseball because you get to bat and play in the field and make plays.
What is your earliest sports memory?
Sami: Doing martial arts with my big brother when I was only 4.
Brayden: Me and my dad having a catch when I was 3 years old and going to the Yankees game with my dad, big sisters, brother, cousins and uncles!
What is your greatest sports accomplishment?
Sami: Hitting two grand slams in a Yavneh Youth League playoff game, even though we lost.
Brayden: Scoring goals in TABC Jr Hockey, and now I hope to start making goals in ice hockey!
Who is your favorite athlete and why?
Sami: Aaron Judge because he has done a lot for the Yankees, bringing them to the World Series.
Brayden: Aaron Judge because he is a very good baseball player.
What is your funniest sports memory?
Sami: When we were shaking hands after a basketball game, I turned back around and started high fiving my own teammates and everybody was cracking up.
Brayden: Hitting the ball in T-ball and running to second, but they told me to go back to first (since T-ball is only one base at a time)!
What do you like to do when you are not playing sports?
Sami: Read and draw.
Brayden: Watch sports.
What is your favorite sports moment?
Sami: My grand slams.
Brayden: Me getting a grand slam in travel baseball!
What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?
Sami: The best thing about being a Sportstar is answering these questions.
Brayden: The best thing about being a Sportstar is getting to tell my mom the answers to the Sportstar questions.
