(Courtesy of JBAR) As the Jewish Bar Association of New Jersey (JBAR NJ) approaches its second year, it’s clear that the organization has made a significant impact in a short amount of time. Founded by a dedicated group of New Jersey attorneys and professionals, JBAR NJ was established with a mission to provide a platform for Jewish legal professionals to connect, support one another and advocate for issues of importance to the Jewish community in the legal profession and beyond. With a rapidly growing network, the organization is already proving to be an influential force in both the legal and broader Jewish communities. From a handful of initial organizers, we have grown to more than 400 members, and some 1,500 followers online.
JBAR NJ was born out of a desire to create a professional space that not only offered networking opportunities but also addressed the specific needs and challenges faced by Jewish legal professionals. The vision was simple: to unite attorneys, judges and related professionals in a meaningful way, fostering both personal and professional growth while advocating for justice and positive change.
The organization has held over a dozen educational, cultural and social events throughout the state, attracting thousands of visitors both from within the Jewish community and supporters from outside. It has taken strong public stances in the media and on its website on such issues as the violent acts directed at Jewish residents; supporting the adoption of the IHRA definition of antisemitism in New Jersey; and repeated public support for Israel and her people, particularly in the aftermath of the October 7, 2023 terrorist attack in Israel. These public statements not only highlight the group’s commitment to standing up for the Jewish community but also serve as a platform for addressing issues that impact us all.
One of the significant moments in its advocacy came when the organization successfully vied for shifting the date of the New Jersey political primary this year; it had originally coincided with Shavuot, in June. The Jewish community is now able to fully participate in the state’s political process.
As JBAR NJ approaches its second anniversary, the organization is eager to continue its work and further expand its network. This is an exciting time for the organization, and other legal professionals and firms are invited to become part of its growing community. There are ample opportunities to join as members and get involved in shaping the future of JBAR NJ. Please consider being part of this important work as JBAR NJ continues to amplify the voices of Jewish legal professionals and advocate for causes that matter to the Jewish community.
A core part of JBAR NJ’s mission is to foster mentorship and support the next generation of legal professionals. In its first year, the group reached out to law students through events such as a speed-networking session with Chabad in Newark, Seton Hall University, and Rutgers Law School. These events are vital for creating opportunities for students to engage with experienced professionals and gain insight into the legal field.
As an organization focused on professional development, JBAR NJ has hosted several Continuing Legal Education (CLE) events, including a Women’s Initiative focused on Jewish divorce law and a South Jersey CLE addressing campus antisemitism. These programs have been incredibly valuable, providing both education and a platform for important conversations around issues impacting the Jewish community.
The launch event, “July Chai,” (held on July 18) featuring international musical star Matisyahu, was attended by numerous dignitaries and was a highlight of the first year, marking a momentous occasion for the organization. This May 27 will be the second gala, Black on Zach, (“Zach” is Hebrew for the number 27), featuring Jewish rap artist, Nissim Black. In addition to last year’s gala, there was a tikun olam (“repairing the world”) event in Deal to support Unit 669, an elite Israel Defense Forces unit specializing in search and rescue. These events have not only allowed the organization to engage with key figures in the Jewish and legal communities but have also supported other meaningful causes.
Over the past year, valuable relationships have developed with other professional organizations and affinity groups. Through participation in events with the Jewish State Troopers Association, the Unity Club and the leadership of the Rutgers Miller Center and International Association of Campus Law Enforcement
Administrators (IACLEA), JBAR NJ has been able to broaden its reach and forge strategic alliances that further its mission.
Looking ahead, JBAR NJ is excited about building on the momentum of its first year, expanding outreach to new members and forging deeper connections within the legal and Jewish communities. The group remains committed to advocating for issues of importance to Jewish legal professionals, providing resources for career development and fostering an environment where members can thrive both professionally and personally.
The organization stands proud of what has been achieved in its first year and is eager to continue building on this success. There are many ways to get involved with JBAR NJ, whether through membership, sponsorship or attending events. Please join JBAR NJ and work together to create an even more impactful organization in the years to come. With your support, JBAR NJ can continue making a difference in the lives of Jewish legal professionals and the communities it serves.
