Once more we read the naivete of a Jewish voter, and I’m sure he’s not alone, in his letter (“Let’s Not Turn Our Backs on Cory Booker,” Bob Trinz, August 23, 2018). Instead of rewarding those who have stood by Israel, we are urged to forgive Cory Booker who turned his back on us numerable times in the hopes that he will in the future “become a better friend.” It seems that the Democrats take the Jewish vote as a given. It is time that we prove them wrong. To believe that Booker did not know what the pro-Palestinian sign he was photographed with stated is unbelievable to any rational person, especially with what was plainly written on the shirt of the girl standing next to him. Booker has repeatedly voted against issues that our community has found important; he came out for the Iran deal, against moving the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, the capital of Israel, voted against the Taylor Force Act in committee (against giving the P.A. money that will be given to terrorists/their families) and was not firmly in support of anti-BDS legislation.
It is true that the Republicans will not be in power forever, but they should feel and be rewarded for the support they have given to our community in the past, with our votes in the upcoming elections. Let the Democrats earn our support by concrete actions, not to vote for them in hopes they will be our friends in the future. We should take actions so we are no longer taken for granted. Let the Democrats know we are no longer “in the bag.”
Mr. Trinz, it’s not easy to turn one’s back on an individual who has already turned their back on us.
Sincerely, Howard J. Cohn New Milford
