The Satisfaction of Military Service

I thoroughly enjoyed Tzvi Chaim Silver’s “Reflections on My Release From the IDF” (Dec. 9, 2021). I think veterans from any army can relate to his experiences, feelings and pride in his service; the empty feeling the first night in basic, the uncertainty as to what the future will be like, the frustrations with not being placed where one thinks one should be, the harsh discipline often necessary in military life, and the constant realization that you are there for a specific purpose which may entail being put in harm’s way, or worse.

These trials and tribulations are counterbalanced by the experiences one encounters, the travel to places not normally seen, the friendships made, and the satisfaction in doing a job well done, even though it may not have been one you expected to do.

Finally, there is the pride only a veteran can feel in serving his country, whether Israel, America or wherever home is, and keeping his family and friends safe and secure.

I look forward to more of Silver’s columns on past recollections and future issues.
