I wanted to write in response to Rosalie Greenberg’s letter “StoryWalk Should Tell a Different Story,” published in the June 23 edition, bemoaning the Teaneck Public Library’s inclusion of the book “Julian Is a Mermaid” as part of their StoryWalk. The letter writer seems to mock the concept of diversity and inclusion, and ostensibly scare parents into believing that our children are at “grave risk” by being indoctrinated by “a radical gender ideology that sexualizes young children.” While I’m sure Mrs. Greenberg put in a lot of time searching the book on Amazon, I have two young children who have read this book many times, as well as similar ones within this genre. I can confirm that neither of my children have been harmed by the reading of this book. We read the book, we talked about it, we answered their questions and we gave it context. The only outcome from reading these books is that our children are thoughtful, empathetic and understand that all people deserve respect and love. I would advise spending less time fighting books that promote diversity, and more time ensuring our children grow up to be kind and compassionate.
