Think Before You Write

I am responding to David Hes’ hate-filled and innuendo-laden remarks in his letter titled “Why America is Burning” in the June 4, 2020 Jewish Link. Without question, the freedom to say stupid and irresponsible things is an important right in this wonderful country, but make no mistake, David Hes’ remarks were unquestionably stupid and irresponsible. I am rather concerned by his willingness to sign his name to those words, but alas, what can one do but respond.

His embarrassing last paragraph sums up the vitriol quite well—”I feel no guilt about the alleged plight of their target audience” (I assume he means the plight of African Americans unnecessarily abused or sady killed by police officers). He continues “Their condition is caused mostly by their arsonist leaders and the foolish, pandering politicians trying to win their favor and their vote.” Now I am confused, so David Hes is blaming police brutality on arsonists? Many, including myself, think the arson, violence and looting are highly counterproductive and do nothing to further any cause; however, to publically make a claim that police brutality against black people is a result of the arsonists?!?!

He concludes with “I am proud to hold my own head high, fully comfortable with wanting our country to operate under an ethos of fairness and justice for all.” That is exactly what the peaceful people on the streets are asking for. Of course the looters and arsonists cannot be tolerated, but, David Hes, please don’t conflate opposition to police brutality with arson. David Hes, think before you write your next letter to the editor. This one is easy fodder for anti-Semites looking to show how the Jews have no understanding of the society around them.
