A woman’s husband had been slipping in and out of a coma for several months, yet she had stayed by his bedside every day.
One day, when he came to, he motioned for her to come nearer.
As she sat by him, his eyes filled with tears as he began to whisper –
“You know what? I am getting very old and weak.
I have been thinking. We have been through a lot, and you have been with me all through my challenges.
You were there by my side when I got fired from that first job at the factory.
When my business failed, I tried to hold on for as long as possible. But I wasn’t alone; you were there with me.
When I got shot at the shopping center, you were right there and immediately called 911.
When we lost the house and were forced out of our home of forty years, you were right there as we left together side by side as they boarded the doors behind us.
Now, as my health started failing, in and out of a coma for months; every time I open my eyes, here you are still by my bedside.
You know what?”
“What dear?” she asked gently, smiling as her heart began to fill with indescribable affection.
“I think you’re bad luck. It’s time for a change.”
Whenever someone talks about “bad luck” or “time for a change,” I think of this tale. It’s obviously a wildly exaggerated perspective of one person’s belief about conditions that are happening to him. I often say you can’t control what happens to you, but you are very much in charge of your response. The markets are changing; we all see how it’s unfolding in front of our eyes. Don’t rely on your circumstances today, and assume you will be able to navigate the changes in real-time. Reach out to someone you trust to get advice, insights, and suggestions on preparing for a change.
