Valley Chabad to Screen New Film Bringing WWII Journals of the Lubavitcher Rebbe to Life

(Courtesy of Valley Chabad) One day he would be known around the world as the Lubavitcher Rebbe. But in 1940, as the ominous shadow of Nazi Germany spread across Europe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson and his wife were refugees trying to escape.

Ever on the move and their future uncertain, Rabbi Schneerson still found time to write extensively, filling numerous journals with his thoughts. Many of the entries were thoughts he kept to himself, but some of them were notes for speeches he would give to his fellow refugees. Drawing on his panoramic knowledge of Torah thought and imbued with his deep affection for his brethren, these speeches were messages of faith and solidarity.

After his arrival to the United States, these journals remained private for the duration of his life. But after his passing they were discovered, and they revealed the thinking and vision of a great Jewish leader in the face of ultimate despair.

On Tuesday, June 23, Valley Chabad’s Academy of Jewish Studies will be screening “Alone, With God,” a new film that brings these journals to life. Combining readings from these journals with rare archival footage of the times and places in which they were written, the film offers an unprecedented entry into the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s way of thinking.

During these times of deep uncertainty, many look for guidance for how to respond to a world falling apart. While these journals were written decades ago, the Rebbe’s voice of faith, hope and consolation suggest a way forward, where the significance of the individual and the way he or she chooses to react is forever important.

The screening will be on Zoom at 7:30 p.m. and will be followed by a Q & A conversation with the film’s director. All are welcome. No charge. Registration at www.valleychabad.org/event.
