Vikings Win K/1 AIFL Championship

Proving the old adage that “defense wins championships,” the Vikings won the Kindergarten/First Grade AIFL Championship on Sunday by blanking the Saints 19-0. Heeding the advice of their coaches Yaakov and Moshe Rosenberg—who before the game emphasized that “zero is the most important number; if they don’t score they can’t beat us”—the stifling defense, led by flag-pulling leader Yishai Neiss, held the Saints without a first down throughout the game as the Vikings shut out their second straight opponent. After the teams each punted on their first two possessions, Shlomo Wenger opened the scoring by taking a delayed handoff from midfield and sprinting in for a touchdown. With Binyamin Rothchild and Netanel Bromberg providing pressure via the blitz, and Gavi Engel and Azarya Rosenberg allowing nothing up the middle, the half ended with the Vikings up 6-0. Early in the second half, Izzy Stechler broke the game open with an 80-yard run, expertly tip-toeing the sideline as he burned past the defense. Yosef Rosenberg put the game out of reach with a center-eligible pass to his cousin Azrya for the touchdown, and Shlomo capped off the scoring with a spin move for the conversion and a 19-0 victory.
