Westchester Day School 6th graders have been immersing themselves in the fascinating history, geography, achievements, government, and culture of India in social studies class. From analyzing and comparing the hierarchies of the Indian caste system and U.S. social classes to studying ancient India and Gandhi’s acts of civil disobedience, the students have undertaken a rich exploration of one of the world’s most influential civilizations.
As part of their study of Indian culture, the students learned a Bollywood dance choreographed by Ms. Roode, associate middle school director at WDS, 8th grade dean and 6th, 7th and 8th grade social studies educator. This vibrant and expressive dance offered a hands-on way to connect with India’s traditions while fostering creativity and teamwork.
The unit also included interpreting some of Gandhi’s most famous inspirational quotes, encouraging students to think critically about the power of nonviolent resistance. To conclude the unit, students will collaborate to write and perform original skits on topics such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Gandhi’s Salt March and Indian achievements.
Through this immersive experience, WDS 6th graders are gaining a deeper appreciation of India’s rich history and cultural heritage while making meaningful connections to our world today.
