The Orthodox Union has backed the Donald Trump administration’s choice of Elisabeth “Betsy” DeVos as its education secretary, and we think it’s an important appointment as well. (See our cover story on this by Phil Jacobs, which jumps to page 70.)
Mrs. DeVos, from Michigan, and a political ally of Vice President-elect Mike Pence, has a track record in her home state of working on the issue of funding for schools of choice and is a huge proponent of school vouchers. One of her goals has always been to relieve the financial burden on families who send their children to religious schools.
She is also extremely familiar with the needs of Orthodox day school and yeshiva families, having worked closely with schools largely located in the suburban Detroit-area communities of Southfield and Oak Park.
While we support a strong public education system as well, we agree that school choice and vouchers should also get a fair shake, and with Mrs. DeVos at the helm of the Department of Education, we believe they will.
