What Seems Small Does Matter

This Shabbat is the Shabbat before Pesach, which is known as Shabbat Hagadol. On this special Shabbat the haftarah is read from the book Malachi. Hashem sent the prophet Malachi to speak with Bnei Yisrael. He said that although Bnei Yisrael strayed, He (Hashem) is willing to turn back to them if they turn back to Him. Similarly, when Bnei Yisrael cried out to Hashem even that little cry out of pain, Hashem turned back to help them. The little connection they had started with Him was enough to save them and take them out of Egypt with miracles.

In this week’s parsha, Metzora, we are told how to give a korban for atonement. The Torah is very specific and it says both what a person who has enough money and a poor person should bring for atonement. The fact that Hashem understands that people are different and is willing to accept atonement for both of the sacrifices equally while one is of greater value teaches us more about Shabbat Hagadol. Hashem wants to get close to us and have us close to Him. He is asking us to make an opening for Him and then He will help us become closer.
