Women’s Awareness Day to Highlight Community Connections

Best-selling author Laura Schroff will facilitate an exploration of women’s connections with the wider community at this year’s Women’s Awareness Day, sponsored by Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ’s Women’s Philanthropy.

The event, featuring Schroff, author of “An Invisible Thread,” will be held Wednesday, April 29, at 9:30 a.m. at the Alex Aidekman Family Jewish Community Campus in Whippany.

The day will begin with a kosher breakfast buffet, followed by the program at 10:15. At 11:45, Schroff will sign and sell copies of her book, the true story of a friendship she formed with an 11-year-old panhandler, Maurice, in New York City in the 1980s. After its launch in November 2011, “An Invisible Thread” was on the New York Times bestseller list for over 38 weeks and was the recipient of many awards. Schroff, who has spoken at over 100 events, encourages her audiences to look for their own “invisible thread” connections and highlights the importance of opening up themselves to opportunities where they can make a difference in the lives of others.

Event co-chair Lisa Olender of South Orange said, “It’s an inspirational opportunity for people to realize that caring and volunteering and lending a hand can go far in many organizations.”

Her co-chair, Eve Sorkin of Short Hills, noted that Schroff’s message should inspire women to discover the color of their own personal thread—the specific factor that motivates them in their volunteerism. “We’re all part of one greater whole,” she said.

Attendees will also learn more about Federation and its own global connections from Danyelle Neuman, managing director of fundraising and resource development at the Jewish Agency for Israel in Jerusalem. She was previously a senior director at Jewish Federations of North America.

Women’s Awareness Day is partially underwritten by a grant from the Maxine Fischer Memorial Fund of the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater MetroWest N.J.

Corporate sponsors are General Plumbing Supply, Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel, Wells Fargo Private Bank, Wells Fargo Advisors, Sunrise Kitchen, and Sunrise Cellars.

Registration for the event is $36; a minimum $180 gift to the 2015 United Jewish Appeal of Greater MetroWest NJ Campaign enables women to attend this event.
