YBH’s fifth grade teams were awarded two Honorable Mention awards out of 100 national applicants and 13 winners by the National DuPont Challenge Science Writing Competition Elementary School Division!
The competition required submissions of alternative energy solutions or a solution to a community-wide issue. One honorable mention was awarded to the project titled “Reduce Flooding in Passaic, New Jersey,” in which the girls constructed a model home to demonstrate how to divert collected rain into rain barrels. The other honorable mention was awarded to the team that proposed using solar panels as an alternative energy source for powering a car; they conducted various experiments using solar panels as an alternative to the negative effects of fossil fuel emissions on the environment.
