(Courtesy of yumacs.com) The Yeshiva University men’s soccer team earned a thrilling come-from-behind Skyline victory over Farmingdale State, 2-1, in double-overtime on Wednesday afternoon. Yeshiva (6-4, 4-2 Skyline) remains in fifth place in the Skyline Conference standings, while Farmingdale State (6-6, 2-3) is currently outside of the playoff picture. The top six teams at the end of the regular season earn a spot in the Skyline Conference championships.
The hero once again was freshman forward Jonah Beberman, who tallied the game-winning goal with just 1:04 remaining in the second overtime period. Beberman now has 10 goals so far this season, including four game-winners.
“It was important for us to bounce-back from the previous match with a strong performance,” Yeshiva University head coach J.J. Davidson said. “It isn’t easy to go to Farmingdale and come back with all three points, but we’ve done that and have earned a valuable win against a direct opponent.”
The Rams got on the board first, as Daniel Mehryari scored on a penalty kick in the eighth minute. The Maccabees answered in the 13th minute, as sophomore forward Alberto Benhamu drilled the ball into the net from 20-yards out, to even the match.
In the second half, FSC had a chance to regain the lead, but Giovanni Lonetti’s header was stopped by freshman goalkeeper Edgar Schottland, in the 74th minute. Both teams had quality scoring chances in the closing minutes of regulation time. Senior defender Joseph Grobman propelled a shot that went high, during the 87th minute. With less than three minutes to play in the second half, Schottland denied a shot by William Grajales. Regulation ended with the score tied, 1-1.
In the first overtime period, Benhamu had chances to win the match for Yeshiva, but all three of his shots were off target. On the other side of the field, Yeshiva’s defense blocked a shot by Kyle Gully, during the 98th minute. A second overtime was needed.
With just 1:04 left to play, senior defender Matan Meloul fed the ball to Beberman, who found the back of the net to clinch the key Skyline win for Yeshiva.
For the afternoon, Yeshiva outshot Farmingdale State, 20-16, while the Rams took seven out of the contest’s 10 corner kicks. Schottland turned aside six shots to earn the win, while his counterpart Scott Flores made 10 saves.
