He’Atid sixth grade students completed their novel study of “A Single Shard” by Linda Sue Park. In the story, the students learned about a child who wants to learn pottery from a master potter, so he becomes an apprentice. As a concluding activity, the school had Michael Preston, an engineer and potter, demonstrate for the students the process of making pottery. Preston discussed the story as well as how pottery was made during that time period. The most fun part of the demonstration was watching Preston use his pottery wheel to create a beautiful piece of pottery out of a small mound of clay just like the child in the story! It was such an enjoyable event that brought their novel study to life.
