(Courtesy of Yeshiva University Libraries) Miriam Hirsch, associate professor of education and chair of the education program, Stern College for Women, takes education far beyond the classroom. ”Teach Like a Human: Essays for Parents and Teachers” (Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, 2020), a collection of essays, provides moral and practical strategies for parents, as well as fellow educators, on encouraging children to care about themselves, their communities and the world we share.
Dr. Hirsch answers the following questions:
How can mindfulness be applied to everyday life?
How does attention to small moments encourage social, physical and emotional health?
How are academic tests and standards harmful to children’s personal needs?
Drawing on her expertise in organizational theory, curriculum study, pedagogy and arts education, Dr. Hirsch explains how parents and teachers alike can design experiences to deepen character, empathy, insight—and, above all, find joy and meaning in the world around us.
Join Dr. Miriam Hirsch and Dr. Deena Rabinovich (director, Legacy Heritage Fund, Jewish Educator’s Project) in dialogue about the issues and challenges we face in “teaching like a human.”
