Linking Northern and Central NJ, Bronx, Manhattan, Westchester and CT

Biblical Text Comes to Life For SAR HS Students

To further their study of Yosef in Egypt, SAR HS Students taking a ‘Drawing From The Text’ class trekked to midtown Manhattan, where they visited Central Synagogue. There, they were fortunate to get a firsthand look at their teacher Mr. David Wander’s visionary artistry. His 12 scenes from the Yosef story weren’t just illustrations; they were windows into the essence of the narrative. Each stroke and color gave a new perspective to the story that the text alone could not provide. In “The Rabbi and the Ugly Man,” shades of gray hung heavy, mirroring the story’s gloomy narrative. But “Zusza and the Birds” revealed a burst of colors, capturing the hidden meaning and colorful imagery of the broken nose. Witnessing these familiar tales told through Mr. Wander’s unique lens was telling. “I learned that true art isn’t about stating the obvious,” said senior Dahlia S-H. “It’s about revealing the story’s true meaning and allowing the reader to view it.”
