Looking for a new and exciting culinary experience for your next simcha?
Look no further—Chef Anthony Gonçalves brings years of fine dining expertise to the Jewish community. Chef Anthony currently employs his culinary virtuosity at Kanopi, an upscale Portuguese Hudson Valley restaurant and event space located on the 42nd floor of the Opus hotel in White Plains, New York. Kanopi’s event space includes room to be socially distanced as well as stunning views of the New York City skyline, the rolling hills of the Hudson Valley and the beauty of Long Island Sound—Kanopi sits atop the tallest building from the Bronx to Boston.
Although the restaurant itself is not kosher, Kanopi offers kosher services under the supervision of Rabbi Greenberg of the Young Israel of White Plains. The decision to offer a kosher service was inspired by the restaurant owner’s Israeli background and Chef Anthony’s Jewish heritage. Cooking high-end kosher food runs in Chef Anthony’s family—the chef’s cousin owns the French bistro Le Marais in New York City. Because of the unique setting, all kosher events at Kanopi are taken very seriously. For each kosher event, Rabbi Greenberg kashers the kitchen and oversees the cooking from start to finish. Silverware and plates are kashered, too.
Kanopi offers a variety of options for engagement parties, weddings, bar mitzvahs, corporate events and private events. “It’s been very successful,” said Chef Anthony, who has been offering this service for around a year and a half. While Kanopi is known for its Portuguese theme, the kosher menu features a Middle Eastern flair.
“The feedback was very good on the fish side of things when we did a pareve occasion,” said the chef.
A recent bat mitzvah menu featured mouth-watering items like “yellowtail amberjack painted with aged soy, lightly torched avocado, piri piri pepper” and “prime dry aged sirloin.” Menus are carefully crafted based on the client’s needs and can include vegetarian and vegan options as well.
Clients have booked this kosher experience one month and up to a year before their event. Whether your event is big or small, Chef Anthony is well equipped to impress. While he typically caters groups from 50-200 people, he can cater cocktail style for up to 300 people.
