Linking Northern and Central NJ, Bronx, Manhattan, Westchester and CT

Are You Buckling Under the Weight of Day School Tuition?

Teach NJS will hold its annual legislative breakfast this Sunday, April 15, from 9-11 a.m. at the Marriott Glenpointe in Teaneck. As this Orthodox Union-sponsored group advocates for fair state funding of nonpublic schools, including day schools and yeshivot, we feel it is important to partner with them as well and encourage our readers to be involved in their work.

Teach NJS was formed by the OU as a collaboration of nonpublic schools, synagogues, Jewish federations, lay leaders to advocate for the needs of its students. The numbers don’t lie. Since its 2015 inception, state funding for private schools has increased from $28.5 million to an expected $75 million for the 2019 fiscal year.

In our recent article, Teach NJS Executive Director Josh Caplan said that while day school parents know they must “shoulder the lion’s share of the cost of educating children,” they also pay taxes. It is Teach NJS’s mission to advocate for that fair share.

But to do that, they need our help as well. Day school parents and all community members are encouraged to come to the breakfast and hear what is being done, and what else can be done. Advocacy organizations are only as strong as their grassroots supporters.

We look forward to greeting you at the breakfast this Sunday. For more information about the legislative breakfast, visit www.teachnjs.org or contact Teach NJS at [email protected].
