Linking Northern and Central NJ, Bronx, Manhattan, Westchester and CT

Baby It’s Cold Outside!

Yes, I agree it has been pretty uncomfortable, especially when the wind is blowing, yet I still find it quite funny that a snow day is declared before even one snow flake has fallen. Now that is what you call bitachon (trust or confidence)! By now one would think that state and city governments would realize that the good old weatherman is not always spot on.

Two weeks ago a snow day was called. My granddaughter who lives in Cherry Hill and hails from Chicago was totally distraught and angry. Her children spent the day going from lawn to lawn with their pails trying to fill them up with whatever snow there was so they could make a snow castle. Lo and behold, there was not enough snow to be found. We reminisced about when she and her siblings went to school on a blustery day with 10 feet of snow all around. There was no such a thing as a snow day. I laughed together with her as we had the same situation in Montreal. Snow days didn’t exist. Piles of snow on each street and children eagerly went to school, knowing they could frolic in the snow on their way there or go out to play during recess.

I just watched a news program from Houston where just today they were inundated with a very unusual snowfall and every person had a smile on their face. They were living in the moment. Even the reporters were taking turns going down hills on toboggans and all kinds of home made sliding devices. Lots of giggles and smiles.

I find just the opposite here. Snow has become a dreaded word. Parents associate it with no school. Public transportation becomes more of a challenge and, except for the ski hill operators, it seems to create a sense of gloom.

Isn’t it amazing how weather in general affects our moods. On a rainy day so many are more grumpy and less friendly. Cold and snow are a no no and bring on dreams of warmth and sunny weather. Come the summer, it becomes dreadfully hot and many are complaining that they cannot take it anymore. Are we ever satisfied with anything? During this past summer there was a period of 90 plus days. Everyone was dreaming of the winter. Well, this week you have it! Are you satisfied? If only it were slightly less cold, slightly less hot, etc etc etc.

Unfortunately this trait of not being satisfied nor making the best of what is does not only apply to the weather.

How many times do I read of situations where a wife will say, “If only he did this.” A husband decrees he is tired of a specific behavior that is being manifested by his spouse. Friendships are great until they are not. Relationships with family members are loving until they are not.

In life, what is it that is really perfect? The answer is nothing, but that certainly does not mean that one’s life cannot be beautiful and satisfying. People need to use the word “satisfied” more often. Only satisfied, not dissatisfied. If we could adopt that attitude then everything, including the weather, would become more tolerable.
