Bergenfield Crossing Guard Injured Near Beth Abraham

Jo-Ann Hans, 60, a Bergenfield crossing guard working near the corner of New Bridge Road and Westminster Ave., was injured Tuesday morning when she was walking congregants across the street to Congregation Beth Abraham for the second day of Rosh Hashanah Services. Rabbi Tanchum Cohen told congregants of the accident during the prayer for the cholim (sick) and led the group in an additional chapter of Psalms to pray for her recovery.

First responders included a Bergenfield policeman who was on hand, as well as several Beth Abraham members who work as EMTs for the Bergenfield Volunteer Ambulance Corps, including Yossi Cohn, who were already at the synagogue.

Hans was hit by a Honda Civic driven by Pawothil Abraham, also of Bergenfield, and was reportedly issued motor-vehicle summonses for careless driving, failure to obey crossing guard and failure to stop to allow pedestrian to cross, the Bergenfield Chief of Police, Cathy Madalone, told The Record. The investigation into the accident will continue, she said.

City officials told the Jewish Link on Wednesday that Hans was in a medically induced coma at Hackensack University Medical Center. On Thursday morning, Rabbi Yaakov Neuburger told congregants that he had met with the family at Hans’ bedside and that, while they are appreciative of the outpouring of concern and are optimistic about her recovery, the family would like to protect their privacy and will share further details only as it becomes appropriate. Rabbi Neuburger shared that he and the shul’s leadership would continue to reach out to town leadership and the family to see how the community can be of help.
