Ben Porat Yosef sponsored an intergenerational chazzanut class Wednesday night, January 10, with renowned chazzan of the Sephardic community, Chazzan Shmuel Levy. Chazzan Levy, BPY’s rav mechanech, and official chazzan of the Edmond J. Safra Synagogue of NYC, conducted the class as part of BPY’s adult education program. Grandfathers, fathers and sons joined for the first class in a continuing series of chazzanut classes for men seeking to become proficient in the Sephardic nusach for cantorial recitation. Guests also enjoyed delicious Sephardic food, such as kibbe, arak and lahemajin, and learned from Chazzan Levy’s wide-ranging knowledge of the intricate Maqam (range of musical scales in classical Middle Eastern music and liturgy) and the nusach and pizmonim of various Middle Eastern and Sephardic communities.
