Bruriah Anatomy & Physiology Students Witness Live Kidney Transplant

Bruriah juniors and seniors studying anatomy and physiology were recently granted the rare opportunity to witness a live kidney transplant. Viewed in real-time via a special theatre in the Liberty Science Museum, students watched carefully as doctors prepared the donor, removed and prepared the kidney for transplantation and then transplanted the donated organ into the recipient. The surgery was broadcast live from Saint Barnabas Health Care System in Livingston, NJ, and was performed by Dr. Stuart Geffner and his team. The opportunity was extended as part of a broader segment on nephrology, in which students are learning about kidney disease, research in the field and organ donation. Most mesmerizing was the moment they witnessed the donated organ turn pink as blood began to circulate to the new kidney upon transplantation.
