The Bruriah High School division of the Jewish Educational Center is renowned for a plethora of annual activities and events.
Among the most popular and board-reaching are the annual Mother-Daughter musical performance, chesed and other grade-level trips and Team Appreciation Night. One of the highlights, if not the highlight, of junior year for every Bruriah student is the Jewish History trip, a two-day overnight experience that exposes Bruriah’s juniors to life on the spectrum of Jewish Orthodoxy.
On the trip, students gain insights into the Chassidish, Torah Umadda, Yeshivish, Modern and Sephardic worlds by visiting Williamsburg, Crown Heights, Flatbush, New Square and Midtown Manhattan to hear from representatives of these communities.
This year, the girls met representatives from Satmar, Skver, Stern College, Touro and the Syrian community among others, and learned what unites us as Jews even though in practice some of us might look or act a differently.
One student summed up her experience this way, “What really spoke to me and something that I wasn’t aware of before this trip was the fact that no matter what path you are on in Judaism, we all have the same goal which is to be the best eved Hashem we can be, and there are so many different paths one can choose to go on in order to achieve that goal. We can learn from the
tremendous acts of chesed and kindness that go on in the chassidish communities. This trip has not only opened my eyes and my mind to look at other Jews in a more positive light and make me have more respect, but it also made me feel tremendous pride and comfort in being a Jew.”
The experience culminated with a special visit with the renowned Rabbi Paysach Krohn, who gave a powerful lecture on “Choosing the Right Derech for You.”
