Now more than ever, companies in the real estate investment, management and development field are looking for assistance with understanding and navigating environmental liabilities and regulations. Enter Hillmann Consulting LLC, an environmental consulting company that focuses on due diligence, remediation, environmental health and safety, and guiding investors and property owners through challenges encountered during development.
Hillmann Consulting was founded in 1985 by Christopher Hillmann, who was looking to bring a more ethical approach to the field. Since then the company has seen significant growth, and now serves clients across the United States.
Etan Hindin, from West Orange, currently serves as their senior project and account manager, and has been with the company for four years. He has experienced, first-hand, the company’s efforts on behalf of a diverse array of clients, from Fortune 500 to family-owned businesses, to avoid or mitigate seemingly insurmountable environmental challenges efficiently and cost-effectively.
“I’ve always been interested in environmental science, nature, the environment and business, and my career is an exciting intersection of those interests,” Hindin shared with The Jewish Link. “I also love getting out, meeting property managers and tenants, hearing their concerns and seeing what’s being constructed and areas that will eventually be developed. I’ve been to many incredible industrial sites, active and historic. There’s always a lot of cool things going on, and I just really enjoy getting to be a part of it.”
Hindin expressed, “My favorite projects are those where we get involved on the initial due diligence side and identify problems and guide the developer through the process of getting the property up to the specifications to make it useful. We do a lot of work in the affordable housing domain, which I also find particularly fulfilling.”
When it comes to what Hindin feels are the strongest aspects of the company, he says it’s their experience in the field and the staff’s extensive knowledge of the industry. “We’ve been around since 1985,” Hindin continued. “I think our company is at a sweet spot with national reach but nimble and down-to-earth. I think we do a pretty good job balancing the needs of the project and the environmental requirements. We’re thorough, but also pragmatic, and for us, it’s all about meeting the clients needs, and getting the job done as efficiently as possible.”
Hillmann Consulting gives a lot back to the community, including being proud sponsors of, a and participant in, the Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest Tour de Summer Camps NJ camp scholarship fundraising biking event. One project coming up that Hindin is especially excited about involves affordable housing.
“We have a project coming up where we have different divisions that will be going out to Buffalo where we’ll be helping with a multi-family development,” Hindin went on to say. “We’re going to be checking on the conditions of the building in advance of a massive refurbishment, checking for things like lead paint, underground heating oil tanks that are out of use and asbestos, among other conditions. Once we understand the conditions, we can guide the investor through the process of mitigation and obtaining federal funds to bring the development up to modern specifications and standards. The end result will be a safer, more energy efficient and sustainable living situation for present and future occupants.”
