(Arutz Sheva and Yeshiva World News) A Jewish student was shot and killed late Tuesday night, August 17, in front of a yeshiva in Denver, Colorado.
The 19-year-old victim, identified as Shmuel (Shmuli) Silverberg, z”l, was standing in front of the dormitories of Yeshiva Toras Chaim when a vehicle pulled up and an assailant opened fire from inside, striking and killing the young man. The vehicle and its occupants immediately fled the area and the victim was rushed to a local hospital.
Police do not believe the victim was deliberately targeted or that the assailant had targeted the yeshiva, as there have been several other similar shootings in the area that did not target Jewish people or institutions.
The fatal shooting was reportedly part of a deadly crime spree, which began with a carjacking without injuries, a second carjacking and a shooting, and then the third shooting. At press time, the Denver Police Department was searching for three vehicles reportedly connected to the shooting. Assailants were considered armed and dangerous.
The Lakewood Scoop reported that the victim grew up in Cleveland and has family in Lakewood. His funeral was set to be held in Lakewood on Wednesday afternoon, August 18.
