JKHA Middle School Initiative Strengthens Gemara Vocabulary

GVL is in full swing for the seventh and eighth grade students at JKHA. GVL stands for “Gemara Vocabulary League.” Every week students are given Gemara words or terms that they will encounter in their Gemara experience throughout their lives. Each week they are quizzed on five new words. Students are currently up to 25 words. By the end of the year they will know close to 200 words! Students were also placed on teams, chose names for their teams and will compete with each other to win the coveted GVL championship. The school often hears from many alumni over the years how helpful the GVL was for them in high school and beyond because of the many words they had mastered from competing in GVL. GVL is an extension of CVL, the Chumash Vocabulary League that originated this creative approach for learning key terms found throughout Chumash, providing students with a strong foundation for Chumash learning.
