Jerusalem–Two weeks after a dramatic ruling and the Knesset Internal Affairs Committee discussed the Israeli Supreme Court’s decision to close down the Sands detention facility and to release the infiltrators imprisoned there, outgoing Interior Minister Gideon Sa’ar called to limit the powers of the Israeli Supreme Court.

The Knesset Internal Affairs Committee convened to discuss possible actions following the Israeli Supreme Court’s decision to change the law to prevent infiltration into the country. In their decision, the Supreme Court actually canceled the possibility to imprison infiltrators for years without trial and to close the Sands Detention Facility within three months.

The Israeli Supreme Court decision, taken at the end of last month, caused a political storm. The laws’ initiator, outgoing Israeli Interior Minister Gideon Sa’ar, who also took part in the discussion, mentioned the possibility of limiting the powers of the Israeli Supreme Court.

“I proposed in a conversation with the Prime Minister to do what the Rabin government did with not kosher meat and to rule that for a law determining human dignity and freedom, the Supreme Court will be prevented from being involved in the issue,” Sa’ar stated in an interview with Israel’s Channel 2 News.

Also the Chairwoman of the Internal Affairs Committee Miri Regev attacked the decision: “The judicial system is detached from the people. The decision of the Israeli Supreme Court calls on everyone in Africa to come live in Israel by entitling the infiltrators here to move around freely. The Supreme Court did not rule for the benefit of the Israeli public and its decision will result in an intolerable reality in Israel.”
