Rabbi Mendy Lewis of Tenafly Chabad Academy teaches his students to love and appreciate Gemara on a whole different level. Utilizing the Gemara Academy Method, which combines a focus on the understanding of the bigger picture and flow of the Gemara, as well as a focus on deeper comprehension of the Gemara text, students are shown a map of the Gemara so that they can see the bigger picture and not become lost in the details. The program also helps the students become familiar with the style and tools that the Gemara uses. Color coded flowcharts help students understand how the ideas in the Gemara are developed, while the PowerPoints and flow charts also mirror the text, enabling the student to better appreciate and become comfortable with it. As the students master the style and tools the Gemara uses, they feel more confident to approach a new piece of Gemara, allowing them to learn the text independently. Finally, as the year progresses, students hone their vocabulary and understanding of key concepts used throughout the Gemara. Just as importantly as teaching his students, Rabbi Lewis instills in them the skills, confidence and passion that will guide and motivate them for years to come.
