The Young Israel of Teaneck is pleased to announce that during Shabbat Parshat Vayeishev, November 30 to December 1, noted Tanach expert Rabbi Hayyim Angel will join the shul as a scholar-in-residence as part of the Dr. Bertram J., z”l, and Ann Newman Adult Education Program.

Rabbi Angel will speak multiple times over the course of Shabbat. On Friday night there will be an oneg at 7:30 p.m. at a private home. His topic will be The Chosen People in an Age of Political Correctness. On Shabbat morning he will deliver the drasha during the 9 a.m. minyan. His topic at that time will be Afterlife in Jewish Tradition and Implications for Today. Mincha will be at 3:40 p.m. followed by seudat shlishit, when Rabbi Angel will speak again. His topic will be Orthodoxy and Confrontation with Modern Biblical Scholarship.

Rabbi Angel told The Jewish Link, “My talks revolve around the interaction between Tanach and its eternal relevance in the context of our community. The bridge between traditional and contemporary scholarship provides us with a stimulating and inspiring toolbox to confront life’s complexities and to grow in our religious commitments.”

Rabbi Binyamin Krohn of the YIOT shared, “We are thrilled to be hosting Rabbi Angel this Shabbat. I am confident that his combination of sophisticated scholarship with down-to-earth pragmatism will allow his presentations to resonate with our community. I had the personal zechut to be a student of Rabbi Angel for many years in Yeshiva University and am excited to have him share his ideas and his warm, engaging personality with our members.”

Rabbi Hayyim Angel is the national scholar of the Institute for Jewish Ideas and Ideals (jewishideas.org). He has taught advanced Bible courses to undergraduate, graduate and rabbinical students at Yeshiva University since 1996. He also serves as the Tanach education scholar at Yeshivat Ben Porat Yosef in Paramus. He lectures widely in synagogues and schools throughout North America, and consults with yeshivot worldwide to improve their Tanach curricula. He has authored 13 books, edited three other volumes and published over 130 scholarly articles, primarily on Bible. Rabbi Angel’s scholarship focuses on the interaction between traditional and academic approaches to Bible study. Rabbi Angel lives in Teaneck with his wife and four children.
