Members of the RKYHS Sports Management Club had the opportunity to visit the offices of the NBA and receive an inside look at the league. After arriving and receiving their credentials, they heard a presentation on the business of sports and the league in general from RKYHS parent Jeremy Rosenfeld, senior director of Finance Operations at the NBA. Rosenfeld gave insight into the league including its global growth and innovation taking place. A Q&A session followed where students asked questions about NBA social responsibility and recent current events, NBA partnerships, changes in the media landscape and more.
The group then had the opportunity to tour the offices. They visited the NBA Replay Center where they saw how calls that are in question including fouls, 3-point shots and out of bounds calls use video replay to determine accuracy. Students then had the chance to meet with the digital operations center and learn about the NBA’s social media operations. The members of the Sports Management Club also toured the live command center where those working in production watch the NBA games and monitor all the broadcast feeds, including internationally and around the country.
The RKYHS Sports Management Club welcomes speakers throughout the year on the business of sports, exposing students to all of the varied opportunities to work in sports as well as learn about the various aspects of sports business. Sample speakers have included sports reporters, agents, players union lawyers, sports card trading experts, team marketing and social media experts and much more. The group also has the opportunity to take trips to get a first-hand look at the business of sports.
