The RYNJ rising seventh graders, many of whom will soon be attending Camp Kaylie, a second-month camp for girls, enjoyed their first summer month at various camps and programs. However, these activities were only during the day and when the girls got home at night, with no schoolwork to complete, their only activity was spending hours texting in their group chat or FaceTiming their friends. They realized that something about their summer was incomplete; they had no night activities. As a group, the girls decided that something needed to be done to remedy their nightly boredom. They took their mothers’ phones and added them to WhatsApp groups for carpools and activity planning. On every night of the week, a different classmate would host a fun night activity to which the carpools would deliver them.
The girls created a Google doc calendar enumerating the different activities. They discussed some of the things that they wanted to do and who could best accommodate each one. Activities include relaxing nights with swimming, a movie, slurpees and a sleepover and even a spa night. One girl offered to host Cupcake Wars, while another organized a barbeque in Votee Park. The girls spent a night packing for Yad Leah, after which they enjoyed an ice cream party at the home of a friend. The girls spent another night learning how to create all different types of slime, a new junior high fad. Next week, the girls have an exciting scavenger hunt planned at Garden State Plaza.
