On February 26, SAM School hosted its Second Annual SAM Talks, a film screening that showcased the incredible growth of its kindergarten through fourth-grade students. Through an integrated social studies and public speaking curriculum, students had been diligently working on a thematic unit focused on New York City’s rich history, culture and landmarks. The culmination of their hard work was presented in TED-style talks that captured not only their academic achievements but also their confidence, creativity and communication skills.
SAM prides itself on creating a learning environment where academics and life skills go hand in hand. The SAM Talks project provided students with an authentic opportunity to research, present and engage with the world around them. They didn’t just learn about New York City – they dove deep into historical events, visited iconic landmarks and studied cultural traditions, developing skills that will serve them throughout their lives.
The concept of learning through action mirrors the Jewish tradition of engaging with the world to better understand one’s place in it. Just as Jewish values encourage seeking knowledge, contributing to communities and leading by example, SAM students are learning to be thoughtful, curious and responsible members of society.
The SAM Talks project emphasizes that while knowledge is important, the ability to communicate and apply that knowledge in real-world contexts is just as crucial. Students are not simply memorizing facts; they are learning how to express ideas, think critically and inspire others with their words. The event showcased the incredible progress students have made this year, as they presented their research on topics ranging from community helpers to Native American history with passion and clarity. These are the kinds of experiences that empower children to become articulate, thoughtful and capable young adults—skills that will help them in the classroom, in their future careers, and beyond. The film screening event was a highlight for the entire community, with students walking down the red carpet, signing autographs, receiving awards and basking in the glow of their accomplishments.
