JKHA second grade read about individuals with special needs and the tools, technology and animals that help them function in daily life. They learned about sign language, vibrating alarm clocks, a glove that translates sign language and guide dogs. To really bring the pages of their guided readers to life, they had a special visit from Judy Sandman and Zana the seeing eye dog who she is helping to train. After Zana spends a year with the Sandman family she will go to guide dog school to be trained. The students loved meeting Mrs. Sandman and Zana and asked many thoughtful and inquisitive questions. The experience really highlighted the special needs many people have and the ways in which those need are met.
