When Shira Golomb began washing sheitels in Teaneck, she had no idea how her business would grow. Originally from Teaneck, Shira started out working in a wig salon in Brooklyn. She gained valuable experience there, but the constant travel was exhausting. Shira knew Teaneck needed a wig service where women could have their sheitels washed, cut and set in a reasonable time frame and for a reasonable price and opened her doors, or rather, her mother opened her doors.
Shira set up a chair in the corner of her mother’s living room and had limited hours for her clients. Now, six years later, her sheitel business has expanded and “I pretty much took over her entire area,” she laughingly said. Shira knew she had to find a place for her business, and as luck would have it, a location became available. Now Style Wigs has moved to 154 West Englewood (across from Knoll Orthodontics) and Shira is ready to see all her clients as well as welcome new ones in her beautiful new studio.
“I appreciate my mother letting me run my business there for so long, but I am so excited to have this new location,” said Shira.
With the new salon, Style Wigs can already offer more services from day one. In addition to wig styling and cutting, Shira will also be able to offer haircuts for women and girls. The location is a perfect setup for her sheitel customers, with a secure drop box outside so women can drop off a wig at any time. “We are also able to offer longer hours and a greater selection of inventory, thanks to our space.”
Shira has been living and breathing the new location over the past couple of weeks as she hurried to add many features to the salon. With private rooms, she will be able to do more appointments. In addition, Shira spent extensive time finding optimal lighting for her wig and hair customers and is really excited for the enhancement beautiful new lighting brings.
Her other location was not just a place to go for sheitel help, and women came as much for the company and camaraderie as the service. Shira anticipates that this will be just as much a part of the environment she cultivates in her new location, and added couches, drinks, snacks and an overall cozy environment where customers can relax and enjoy.
Knowing that the hair-covering clientele expands beyond the Orthodox circle, Shira runs her business with sensitivity as well. “Women come to me to cover their hair for a variety of reasons and from many backgrounds,” she said. Some come for medical reasons, some for different levels of hair covering, some may even just want to get a small piece for a family simcha. Whatever the reason, she has many options for them and knows how personal this experience can be.
