The Jewish Link of New Jersey and Teaneck Doghouse would like to recognize 14-year-old Liav Merlin as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. A recent graduate of Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy in Livingston, Merlin has been playing soccer both in middle school and for Livingston travel for many years. This past year, she served as captain for both the school’s soccer and basketball teams, earning her MVP trophies in both. Merlin is a diligent student who possesses tremendous energy both on the field and in the classroom.
Liav, mazel tov on your middle school graduation! Who are your role models and why?
My parents who have guided me and taught me always to work hard and be a good person.
What is your favorite sport?
My favorite sport is soccer.
What is your greatest sports accomplishment?
Winning the first ever Kushner YMSSA girls soccer championship. It was tremendous being able to be a part of such a great team.
Who is your favorite athlete and why?
Carli Lloyd. She has had so many accomplishments such as being an Olympic gold medalist. I look up to any sports player who works hard and puts in effort to accomplish their goals.
What is your pregame routine, if you have one?
Drink plenty of water.
What is your earliest sport memory?
My first soccer practice running around those orange cones.
What is your favorite sports memory?
Being in camp Ramah and scoring the winning goal in a soccer tournament with other camps in front of the whole camp. It was a great moment.
What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?
Hanging out with friends.
What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?
Being part of amazing teams and having incredible coaches. A big part of my middle school experience consisted of soccer and basketball.
