The Jewish Link and The Humble Toast would like to recognize Gabriella Butler as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The Frisch School freshman is coming off an amazing season, where she helped lead the Yavneh RedHawks to the YMSSA championship. In the championship game she led all scorers with 18 points in defeat. When asked about Butler, Yavneh Academy basketball coach Mo Sanders told The Jewish Link, “Gabriella, or ‘GBut’ as she is known on the court, was an integral part of Yavneh Academy’s eighth grade basketball team that was such a fun team to be a part of. Her constant desire to improve her game, along with her mental toughness and leadership abilities helped propel the team to a 7-1 finish and a spot in the championship game. Her family’s constant support and presence at her games made her shine as a player, but more importantly, as a person. We wish you all the best in high school, Gabriella!” Shana Steinmetz of Hustle and Heart added, “ Gabriella is a great player. She was the winner of our most improved player award at basketball camp. She works hard and has a great shot.”
Gabriella, congrats on being recognized as this week’s Sportstar of the Week! Who are your role models and why?
My role models are my family. My mom and dad are always there to support me through any of my hockey or basketball games. They always drive me to all my practices and games. My twin brother Charlie is always there to help me or give me any tips and just to play with me all the time. I’m glad he’s always there for me.
What is your favorite sport?
Even though I play a bunch of sports my favorite has to be basketball. I love the team aspect and how your team becomes a family.
What is your pregame routine?
Just warm up by practicing layups and jump shots from each side.
What is your greatest sports accomplishment?
I have a bunch but some of them are, winning all around athlete in Camp Lavi three times, scoring around seven 3s against Morasha two summers ago at inter-camps, winning and getting MVP in MGBL last year, and winning a lot of different championships in different programs.
Who is your favorite athlete and why?
Even though my favorite sport is basketball, watching hockey is my favorite. My whole family are big Devils fans. My favorite players are Hamilton, Haula and Hughes. They all have different specialties that make them unique and that’s what I like because everyone’s different.
What is your earliest sports memory?
Winning All Around Athlete when I was 9 years old.
What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?
I love to go shopping at the mall with my friends and my mom and just hang out with my amazing friends.
What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?
It feels good that my hard work paid off.
