The Therapy Gym’s Tips for Tots: Masking Up and Seating Options

Our schools have reopened and our children are finally able to return to a more “normal” way of learning.

Many regulations have been put in place to ensure the safety of our children and their teachers. Everyone is required to wear masks throughout the day indoors. This is a difficult task, especially for those not used to wearing masks.

Preschoolers: Children learn through play.

1. Have your child decorate a mask with tie dye or color a paper mask with crayons. Play games with your child that involve having their stuffed animals or dolls wear masks. Show your child pictures of people wearing masks.

Five through 12 years old: Children want to understand the importance of wearing a mask.

Explain to your child about how masks help keep them safe from bad germs. Allow them to accept the responsibility of helping others stay safe by wearing a mask.

Some of the procedures put in place in school this year include children staying at their desks and not getting up to walk around the room or having close contact with their peers in the classroom during the day.

Here are some of my favorite seating options to integrate into the classroom to allow children who need to fidget, be grounded, or sit on the floor.

Some children benefit from wobble chairs, rocker chairs, wobble cushions, or floor desks as they allow the child to have more wiggle/fidget room. Floor desks also allow a child to feel grounded and sit more comfortably.

Wishing everyone a healthy and safe start to school.
