As the conclusion to the Unlit Menorah Project, Highland Park flooded the darkness with the lights of 135 fully lit menorahs on the eighth night of Chanukah. More than 100 people came out to light the candles, which each represented hostages still held captive by Hamas. Posters with brief biographies of the kidnapped and returned hostages, Israeli flags, and blue and white ribbons decorated the building and tables.
People of all ages and from across the Jewish religious spectrum met at the dark and desolate site of a former gas station and transformed it to a bright and welcoming place. The crowd joined in the singing of Hatikvah, as well as Jewish and traditional Chanukah songs, while watching the candles.
