At Westchester Day School, tradition and community go hand in hand, and last week’s Hamantashen bake was a beautiful reflection of both. In the days leading up to Purim, kindergarten through fourth grade students had the opportunity to roll, fill and shape the festive holiday treat in a hands-on experience that blended learning, joy and connection.
This meaningful initiative was generously sponsored by Laurie and Matt Block—parents of Noa (K), Eitan (2nd), and Aaron (4th)—in memory of Laurie’s beloved father, Ira Kolin z”l, as his first yahrtzeit approaches. Through this act of kindness, the Blocks found a heartfelt way to honor his legacy while bringing warmth and sweetness to the WDS community.
Reflecting on the experience, Laurie expressed how deeply she felt the support of the WDS family during this milestone. In a moving note, she shared the special connection between her father and Hamantashen, inviting families to continue his memory:
“The children’s Hamantashen were baked in the WDS kitchen this afternoon and will be sent home in backpacks tomorrow. Please join us in remembering ‘Grandpappy Ira’ by assisting your child in making a mezonot bracha on their Hamantashen. May his memory always be for a blessing.”
As the scent of freshly baked Hamantashen filled the school, so too did the spirit of generosity, remembrance and togetherness—hallmarks of what makes WDS such a special place.
