WTA always parties like it’s the second century BCE during Chanukah! In 5773, students celebrated the holiday in different ways. Overnight, the school was transformed with Chanukah decorations. In middle school, students are starting off the week with a Dreidel Bracket; When this article was written, the students didn’t know it yet, but they were about to have Maccabiah, or color war, breakout—and the rest of the week would be filled with competitions in everything from sports to knowledge to kindness and cleaning up!
Not to be outdone, the rest of the school has a series of fun events planned. Apart from sharing in the middle school minyan’s Hallel b’tzibur, the lower school started off the week with the Chanukah Knowledge Bee! Last week, each class competed internally in a series of games about Chanukah facts and minhagim—all run by the fantastic bnot sheirut—and through these games each class chose representatives for the full-school Chidon. The top class will have an ice cream party, as well as bragging rights, until the next school-wide competition.
Of course, Chanukah wouldn’t be complete without a big sing along, and WTA will be celebrating with songs, games and snacks—first at the Chanukah Song Festival, and then at the Chanukah Fair! Students of all ages will have a chance to explore different games and minhagim, learning and playing all at once. Finally, the week will end on a high note with two different puppet shows for the whole early childhood and lower school—another exciting and different way to share classic Jewish stories and pass on our mesorah.
